Rick Charette & The Bubble Gum Band!

Attention all moms in the Greater Blue Hill area...tomorrow (Sunday) at 7PM, Rick Charette and the Bubble Gum Band will be performing at the Blue Hill Fair!  Pack up your little ones for an evening of horse, cow and pig petting and then kick back and enjoy "Mud" and "Alligator in the Elevator".  I can't believe he is still performing.  I remember going to one of his concerts in Brewer, ME when I was a child (well over 20 years ago now).  Nevertheless, he is a hit with the kiddos- so don't miss out and enjoy what is left of your Labor Day Weekend!

As moms, we view the world through different eyes. We are always concerned about what the world is and will be like for your children and their children. Excited about the election and ready for a change?  Or tired of all of the political coverage?  Regardless, of your views or political party, here is a little clip from The Onion that will help brighten your day.  Enjoy!

Bangordailynews.com to Launch New Community Site With a BANG!

I have heard through the grapevine that the Bangor Daily News will soon be launching a new community site they are calling Maineville.  In addition to their current news site, which is getting a much needed facelift on Friday, August 22, 2008, they will be unveiling a community website consisting of 24 local town pages with loads of opportunity for community involvement and participation.  Maineville.com is set to launch on September 17, 2008 and will include: community news, photos, videos, shopping and iHosts.  If you have opened the BDN or been on their website recently you may have noticed iHost ads.  Yes, that is right - they are searching for local virtual hosts to represent the 24 towns of their community website.  Word has it that although these positions won't be paid, there will be some neat little perks including: cameras, clothing, a free newspaper subscription, prize drawings and more.  And according to some that have already inquired, the time commitment for the gig isn't that large: 20 - 30 minutes per week.  Interested?  Check out their iHost ad that is currently running online.

The best part of this new site?  To promote and kick off Maineville.com with a bang, the Bangor Daily News will be running a 24 day contest (1 day for each Maineville town).  The prize?  A NEW CAR!  That's right, a new Chevy Cobalt.  Not too shabby for a Maine website promotion.  We love the idea and will be waiting anxiously for a chance at winning the wheels.

Childcare: The Necessary Evil

My husband and I are planning on expanding our family again (big grin) and I am starting to look at alternative childcare in the Greater Bangor Area (Bangor, Brewer, Holden, Orrington, Hampden).   My two year old daughter currently is attending a home based daycare but I wasn't sure if there are any highly respected daycares out there.  Would be enrolling a 3 year old and an infant.  Suggestions?

I am currently paying $140/week for my daughter (until November when she hits 30 months).  Is this average?  Or am I being taken to the cleaners.  I definitely believe you get what you pay for but just want to get a feel of what others are paying.

No Nursing Hooters in Public...But It's Okay for Hooters to Serve Wings

Last week was World Breastfeeding Week.  A week that is supposed to help us celebrate and support a woman's ability to nurse whenever and wherever necessary.  And yet the ethics of breastfeeding continues to be questioned.  Yes, the ETHICS of breastfeeding - are you kidding?? Why is this a debate?   It is okay for boobs to be oozing out and only slightly concealed by a Hooters tank tops but it is unacceptable for boobs to be concealed by the nursing head of an infant?  According to commenters on Chow.com, breastmilk smells and babies make noise.  Really??  No - I don't believe it (please note sarcasm).  I'm sorry Mr. Restaurant Patron, but I don't want to smell or hear you chomping on that supersized smelly taco but I have to smell and listen to you eat - BECAUSE YOU HAVE A RIGHT TO NURISHMENT...AND SO DO NURSING INFANTS!!!  Yes, I do believe nursing can and should be done tastefully, but really folks.  In a society where we have Hooters restaurants, wear daisy dukes and listen to hit songs called "The Thong Song" or "My Humps", I really don't see how nursing an infant can even compare.  What is the world coming to?  I'm SERIOUSLY worried for my children's future now.  Ugh.

Nike + Technology Saved My Ass...Literally!

I have found what could possibly be my saving grace: Nike + technology.  If you haven't heard of it, don't worry, I will fill you in - and you will be grateful that I did.  If any of you are like me, you just don't get the amount of exercise (or motivation to exercise) you should be getting on a daily, weekly or monthly basis.  Life happens - I mean, YOUR A MOM!  :)  But Nike has created this clever device that just may get you off your can.  Hey, it worked for me!

What is Nike +?  Nike has teamed with Apple (go figure), and has created a small fob that is inserted under the insole of certain models of Nike running sneakers.  This fob then communicates to your iPod and tracks distance, time, pace, calories, etc of your workouts.  You can walk, run or jog - speed doesn't matter since it measures the impact on the fob.  It is amazing!  No more pedometers.

To sweeten the pot, they have jumped on the social networking bandwagon and have created their own Nike + website that allows you to join virtual groups online.  These groups are called challenges.  I am part of a challenge on Nike + that is composed of 75 mothers.  Group members are from around the country or even the world.  Location doesn't matter.  Rules have been set by the group administrator/creator (i.e. you must walk/run no faster than an eight minute mile and must complete 75 miles in 30 days). Each day (or in my case weekly because my life seems to be so hectic lately), I connect my iPod to my computer and iTunes automatically sends my walk information to Nike where it is stored in my profile.  The result?  I am in a virtual mom group that is racing against each other, motivating each other and pushing each other to continue to exercise.

The REALLY great part?  I can't fib about working out!!!  You can't manually enter workout stats.  Information can only be uploaded to your Nike profile after actual workouts have been completed and stored.  That requires actually walking on the fob.  Shaking it doesn't work.  Not that I have tried that.  :)  haha

A law against spanking?

Disciplining children is a hot topic.  Especially the issue of spanking.  Whether you are a parent, child, teacher, grandparent, non-parent or now...the government, you have your beliefs.  What are your feelings on this spanking article?  Government intervention and a spanking law?  Is spanking acceptable or unacceptable?  And is the government in the right to decide?  Your thoughts????

Staycations aren't so bad!

My husband, daughter and friends visited the Maine Inland Fisheries & Wildlife Park in Gray, Maine this weekend. What a great day trip for the family! Unlike several other Maine "zoos" or so-called "animal refuge centers" I have been to, the Park was clean, staff was friendly and the animals were easy to see and healthy! Almost all the animals at the park were rescued and are native to Maine. The animals at the Park include: bear, owls, hawks, eagle, racoon, fox, turtles, deer, moose, fish, lynx, coyote, turkey vultures, a peacock and so much more! There are even fawns that come right up to the young children and eat grass out of their hands - so cute! In addition to the animal exhibits the Park also offers numerous events throughout the year: Rick Charette concert, fly tying and casting exhibits, Native American POW WOW and many more! For more info on the Park, go to their website: http://www.maine.gov/ifw/education/wildlifepark/index.htm. With the price of gas and the financial pinch everyone is experiencing...this staycation is worth it. Entrance fees are only $6 for adults, $4 for kids under 12 and free for kids under 3 years old. Check it out for yourself. You won't be disappointed!

Why 'Why'?

Some call it the terrible twos, others call it being inquisitive. I just want to know why they always ask "Why?" My daughter has begun to ask "why?" after everything that anyone says. Example: "We are going to Nana & Papa's house." - her response: "Why?". "Come have breakfast sweetie" - her response: "Why?". Ignoring the question hasn't worked. Answering the question hasn't worked. I'm sure most if not all parents have encountered this but has anyone tackled these frustrating "whys" in a clever manner? Have you managed to get your kid(s) to stop somehow? If so...let us know how!

Potty Training

My daughter turned 2 years old in May. We have been focusing on potty training and have made progress, but aren't there yet. She refuses to go poop in the toilet...instead she hides and does it in private. Is this common? Any suggestions? I've read "the books"...but I want a REAL opinion. Have success with candy? Stickers? A long potty training boot camp? I want to know!
